How did your State Representative vote?
On November 7th, 2024, the People of Massachusetts voted overwhelmingly for full transparency. 72% of voters voted to have the State Auditor audit the legislature.
Just one week later, on November 14th, 2024, the House of Representatives voted on section 85A of the House rules, which is the section that pertains to the audit.
👎❌ YES VOTE = The Speaker of the House continues to control the audit. No transparency. Not what 72% of voters voted for!
👍 ✅ NO VOTE = The State Auditor controls the audit. This is what 72% of voters voted for! Only 10 Representatives voted NO.
In Section 85A:
-
The House controls the audit process
-
The State Auditor only recommends the firm from a given list
-
The audit is done by a private firm, not the elected State Auditor
It is not the same as the voter-approved audit of the legislature by the State Auditor that 72% of Massachusetts voters supported.
Rule 85A lets the Legislature hire an accountant to check its books.
The 72% vote was about letting the elected State Auditor actually audit how the Legislature operates.
